Why Rain Isn't Enough to Keep Solar Panels Clean

Published on August 22, 2026 By Feichang

Rain removes loose dust, but it does not remove what actually hurts solar output: dried mineral spots, bird droppings, pollen film and the invisible residue left after water evaporates. In dry regions or long rain-free stretches, unwashed panels accumulate a soiling layer that can cut generation by several percent per month. Brushing, not rainfall, is what restores output.

Why Rain Isn't Enough to Keep Solar Panels Clean

What Rain Actually Does to a Panel Surface

Rain is an uneven cleaner. It washes the top of the panel but often leaves a grime line near the lower edge, where water pools and evaporates, concentrating minerals. On low-tilt panels, the pooled water leaves a hard-water film that is harder to remove than the original dust.

The 4 g/m² Dust Problem

Soiling studies commonly cite dust loads in the range of hundreds of mg per square meter on lightly soiled panels and several grams per square meter in desert or agricultural zones. At those loads, output losses of 2% to 7% per month are typical without intervention. Rain may remove part of the load, but the mineral and organic fraction stays.

What Rain Cannot Remove

  • Hard-water spots. Minerals left after evaporation bond to glass.
  • Bird droppings. Acidic and sticky; they bake on in sunlight.
  • Pollen and tree sap. Organic film that resists plain water.
  • Exhaust and industrial film. Oily residue from nearby roads or plants.

The Rainy-Season Trap

Many owners assume a rainy winter means clean panels in spring. In practice, winter rain washes the surface but spring pollen and summer dust rebuild the film quickly. The cheapest schedule is a spring inspection and one mid-summer cleaning in most climates.

FAQ

Q: If I live in a rainy area, do I ever need to clean panels?

A: Yes, at least once or twice a year. Rain misses droppings, mineral spots and the lower-edge grime line.

Q: Is it better to clean before or after rain?

A: After rain, when loose dust is already gone, or before a long dry spell. Avoid cleaning in direct hot sun with tap water that will spot.

Q: Does morning dew clean panels?

A: No. Dew can even help dust stick when it evaporates.
